1st Grade

Teachers: Stephanie Hanson, Stacy Kreyer, Elizabeth Lindsay, Sarah Rude, and Lori Tinker

First grade is a very exciting year for students as this is the year they learn to read. We provide students with a strong foundation in phonics, so they are able to sound out unknown words while they are reading. The emphasis on phonics also helps students become better spellers and writers. As students become better readers, they learn how to discuss stories in great detail. We ask that all parents practice reading with their child at least 15 minutes every day.

In math we stress the basic number facts, counting, telling time, measurement, story problems and use of critical thinking skills to solve problems. Again, we ask that all parents practice math skills with their child at home. In addition to the basics, students participate in art, music, physical education and classroom guidance classes.

All first graders take a field trip to the Beloit Memorial Hospital to participate in the Operation Timothy Program. This program helps students feel more comfortable if they would ever have to stay at a hospital or have an operation. Students also participate in two all-school field trips and school-wide assemblies.
